Perdita Goodenow was born in Houston, Texas and now lives in Everett, Washington. When she was just 22 months old, her father died of a heart attack and her mother moved with her to Oklahoma City. She spent her early years in Oklahoma, Texas, Germany and then on to California.
Perdita graduated from Costa Mesa High School. One relevant highlight from those years was an exceptional English teacher. His encouragement in her writing left a lasting impression.
Directly across the street from the High School was Orange Coast Junior College, where Perdita received her AA degree, majoring in Germanic Language. Subsequently, she moved to beautiful Santa Barbara and completed her B.A. in German at U.C.S.B.
Perdita then entered the school of life and with that came many lessons on the value of serving others, which began by serving as a waitress. With marriage and children, however, the responsibilities of family life became her full time job (see photos of Perdita's children at left). In addition, she has worked with disabled children, primarily with non-verbal children, and has been very committed in her care of them and her service to their families.
For many years, Perdita has enjoyed having a seasonal vegetable garden and delights in the morning ritual of going out to see how much her little garden has grown. This love for gardening, as well as her love for books and words and serving others, are all important elements of her life, and they are reflected in her first book… The Word Garden.
